The much-anticipated Kharghar-Turbhe Tunnel Link Road (KTLR) project has officially begun, marking a major step toward reducing traffic congestion and improving connectivity within Navi Mumbai. With an investment of Rs 2,099 crore, the project is expected to drastically cut travel time and enhance links to the broader Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
Once completed, the KTLR will reduce the current 40-minute journey between Turbhe and Kharghar to just 10 minutes. This significant reduction in travel time is set to ease the daily commute for thousands of motorists using the busy Sion-Panvel highway. Officials have announced that the project will be fully operational by September 2028, providing faster and more efficient travel for residents and businesses alike.
The KTLR project aims to overhaul transportation in the region by offering a direct route that links key areas in Navi Mumbai. According to officials from the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), the project’s nodal agency, motorists traveling to Navi Mumbai from the Sion-Panvel highway will gain quick access to the KTLR from the Jui Nagar railway station, saving up to 30 minutes of travel time.
The ambitious plan includes a 1.8-kilometer twin tunnel through Kharghar hill, a 3.4-kilometer elevated viaduct, and a series of roads that connect to major infrastructure projects. The road will start at Turbhe and run alongside the Sion-Panvel highway, leading to Juinagar railway station before tunneling under Kharghar hill. It will then extend to the Central Park junction in Kharghar, where a 1.5-kilometer elevated road will connect to Taloja’s central jail. Additionally, a subway will link Central Park to the proposed international corporate park.
Once completed, the KTLR will not only reduce travel times to Kharghar and Taloja but will also provide direct access to the CIDCO golf course in Navi Mumbai. This improved connectivity is expected to boost both commercial and residential growth in the region.
